In West Greenwich, an off duty state police officer died after his car hydroplaned and crashed. There was one indirect fatality related to the mid-March event. Blue Pond Dam failed in the headwaters of the Wood River in Hopkinton, with damage to infrastructure in the area. In addition, Chapman Pond was flooded so badly that it effectively shut down Route 91 and Pound Road, causing a prolonged blocked access to an entire neighborhood. In Westerly, a mile of train track in Westerly was inundated, resulting in a suspension of Amtrak services. The Pawcatuck River was so severely impacted that it did not recede below flood stage until April 12. The Pawcatuck River in Westerly reached a new record level, exceeding the previous record which was set by storm surge from the 1938 Hurricane. Sandbagging operations kept I-295 from being shut down, though there were ramps which were closed. In Cranston, I-95 was shut down due to flooding, as well as the Airport Connector, which provides access from I-95 to TF Green Airport in Warwick. The Warwick Mall was under 2 feet of water. The West Warwick Waste Water Treatment Plant was substantially inundated by floodwaters. This record crest was smashed during the event at the end of the month by an elevation of 6 feet. The Pawtuxet River in Cranston, a location monitored with a river gage since 1939, broke its record crest during the mid-March event. The result was record river flooding across much of Rhode Island. Some rivers and streams were only slightly below flood stage at the onset of this rainfall. The culmination of these successive rainfall events occurred from March 29 to 31, when 6 to 10 inches of rain fell over Rhode Island. The successive nature of these moderate to heavy rainfall events saturated soils and limited opportunities for rivers and streams to recede, making the state vulnerable to flooding, especially by the end of March. This flood event was caused by a series of moderate to heavy rainfall events over a 5-week period during late February through late March. The Great Flood of 2010 occurred in March and early April 2010.
